Checkups, Cleanings & Exams

The quiet workhorse of a healthy smile — a gentle exam, a thorough clean, protective fluoride, and an honest conversation. Twice a year, unhurried every time.

What It Is

Where prevention actually happens.

Children get cavities and gum disease just like adults do — they're simply far less able to tell you when something's wrong. The cleaning-and-exam visit exists for exactly that reason: it lets us find tiny trouble spots while they're still painless, easy fixes.

The visit itself is relaxed and kid-paced. We take it slowly, build rapport, and explain every step before it happens — then examine, gently clean, and finish with protective fluoride, all in the same easy appointment.

Inside the Visit

One appointment, six quiet jobs.

A single unhurried visit covers everything a growing smile needs to stay ahead.

The exam

A careful look at the teeth and gums for decay, gum disease, and anything that deserves closer attention.

The cleaning

Brushing helps, but it can't reach everything. We clear plaque on, between, and along the gumline, then polish.

Fluoride

Painted on in minutes with no irritation — strengthening enamel and cutting cavity risk by about 30 percent.

X-rays, when helpful

X-rays reveal decay or infection hiding below the surface, between teeth, and under the gumline — places no visual exam can see.

A sealant check

The deep grooves of back teeth can be sealed in a couple of minutes per tooth — often during this same visit. About sealants.

The coaching

Brushing and flossing made doable, plus snack and drink pointers your whole family can actually keep.

Why the Rhythm Works

We'd rather see your child when nothing hurts.

Plaque and bacteria cause no complaint at first — left alone, they become cavities and gum disease. And even a growing cavity doesn't always hurt, which makes it nearly impossible to spot at home until it's bigger.

Twice-a-year visits catch issues while they're small — often treatable on the spot — and keep baby teeth healthy until they're naturally ready to go, which clears the way for healthier adult teeth behind them. Skipped visits run the other direction: toward infection, pain, and missed school days. The CDC counts 164 million work hours lost to dental issues every year, including parents taking time off for a child's care. A steady rhythm of prevention hands that time back.

You don't have to wait for a toothache

The best time to come in is when nothing hurts — that's when prevention does its finest work. And if your child does mention a sore tooth, come at the first sign: decay removed while it's small is a quick fix, not an emergency.

What to Expect

A checkup, start to finish.

Four unhurried steps — gentle, friendly, and over sooner than anyone expects.

  1. Settle in

We bring your child back, get them comfortable, and talk through what today holds — in their words, not ours.

  2. Look closely

A visual exam of the teeth and gums, with X-rays when they're helpful, to find anything hiding out of sight.

  3. Talk it through

Whatever we find, you hear about it in plain English — and a minor cavity can often be treated the very same day.

  4. Clean, polish, protect

A thorough cleaning and polish, finished with fluoride — then home-care tips and a date in six months.

Gentle care for sensitive teeth

Some children avoid the dentist because they're worried it will hurt — especially if a tooth already feels sensitive. We practice deliberately gentle dentistry and go at your child's pace, always. Mention any twinges during the exam and we'll adjust on the spot, then talk through helpful next steps like fluoride or a sealant.

Common Questions

Checkup questions, answered.

Twice a year is the sweet spot for most children. Regular cleanings remove the plaque and bacteria a toothbrush can't fully reach, and they let us catch tiny issues while they're still small and easy to treat. We'd much rather see your child when nothing hurts than wait for a problem to grow.

No. A cleaning is gentle, and our team is trained to take it slowly and follow your child's pace. If a tooth ever feels sensitive, just tell us — we'll adjust immediately and talk through options that help, like fluoride or a sealant.

A little familiarity goes a long way. Read a story about visiting the dentist, or play a game where your child examines a favorite toy's teeth. When the real visit arrives, it feels like something they already know rather than something brand new.

Only when they're genuinely useful. X-rays help us find decay or infection below the surface, between teeth, and under the gumline — places a visual exam can't fully see. We'll let you know if and when they'd help your child, and explain everything before we begin.

As Unrestricted (out-of-network) providers, we accept all PPO plans, and we're happy to walk you through your benefits in plain English. Call us at (760) 730-3456 and we'll verify coverage before your child's visit.

Six months from now starts today.

One unhurried visit, twice a year, is most of what a healthy childhood smile requires. Booking takes about a minute.
